Students
Employers, colleges, and universities are increasingly looking for students who have demonstrated experience in leadership and service activities. In addition to improving learning, service learning can provide students with an edge when it comes to developing skills and abilities.
Involvement
Students perform service at non-profit community agencies and are often able to choose the agency where they will serve.
Courses
Service learning guidelines depend on individual course requirements specified in the course syllabus. Students should work with course instructors to complete service learning required for specific courses and determine whether the project is done independently or collaboratively.
Others who would like to become involved in service learning should encourage their professors and department chairs to initiate new service learning classes.
Assignments
Reflection assignments encourage critical thinking and demonstrate student learning through various forms (journals, essays, class discussions). Structured reflection activities provide a means through which the relationship between service and course content can be studied and interpreted.
